The Lion King

Can’t come up with a single word to describe the amazing Broadway production of a loved movie. Amazing! Creative! Energizing! Mind Boggling! If you ever get a chance to see this play I would HIGHLY recommend it. I was given a ticket for Christmas and had NO idea it would be as good as it was. We spent a lot of time trying to figure out the clever engineering of the animal costumes/puppets. I loved the movie the first time I saw it, the most striking line being when Simba sees Mufasa in the stars, he has lost his self confidence and feeling pretty low; Mufasa says to him, “Remember whose son you are.” I was thankful that they included it in the play as well, because it reminds me of God the Father, when His Son Jesus Christ was here on earth. I think of both when Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and when He was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. It also reminds me that I always need to remember whose child I am, no matter what I am “feeling.”

In the aftermath of a migraine

Yes, I have migraines. None of that average, run of the mill stuff for me, I have a rare form listed under complicated migraines. It is fitting though as my mom has said that I have always been “complicated.” After having the wonderful Lasik surgery that Michael, at Chasing the Vision Wind, speaks so highly of, my vision started to deteriorate. (it has been 3 1/2 years since the surgery) The doctors wanted to see if it was my medicine, so they took me off all the stuff that was controlling the migraines, low and behold, the opthamologist said it is the disease not the treatment. However, being off the meds, well let’s just say it wasn’t pretty! Thank you God I have the medicine back. (though that is a catch 22) Needless to say it has been a long couple of weeks, but now I hope to be back to my computer more. Okay, more than the long hours at work we have had fighting with a new software program! I haven’t even been keeping up very well with my favorite bloggers: Vox, Chasing the Wind, Sand in the Gears, and Uptown Girl. AARRRGHH! Hopefully I will be back on track now, which could be scary!!

Another way that teenagers cause a parent to lose sleep…

BURNING POPCORN AT TWO O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING!!

We have eyes in the back of our heads, sensitive ears for when they try to sneak in late, do we really need noses sensitive enough to smell what they are burning in the middle of the night??

Yeah, I suppose I would want to know if he was burning anything else!

“Safe!” or “Out?”

Filed under: General, Look at Jesus |

I was reading Jon Courson’s Application Commentary last night and came across something that had to be shared. First, this book is excellent for anyone wanting to get into the Word. It has the full scripture of the New Testament, set up like a regular bible, but then Pastor Jon adds commentary after most of the verses. You read along and he explains the verse with either the culture of the time it was written, modern adaptation, or personal stories that bring light and understanding to the scripture you just read. He also has included 179 topical studies/sermons that are throughout the book. The flap describes it as an easy to read verse by verse, devotional commentary. Okay, enough said about that, just suffice it to say it is fabulous, makes you hunger to read more!

The following is a short example:

Luke 1:79b
…to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Our third mandate is to share direction. The question I am asked most frequently is, “How can I receive God’s guidance?” The answer is to walk the way of peace. The greek word translated “rule” literally means “umpire,” so Paul told the Colossian believers to let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts (Colossians 3:15). How are we to know what to do? We are simply to walk with the Lord, enjoy our relationship with Him, and follow the peace in our heart, which will tell us if any given direction is “Safe!” or “Out!”

For those of you who already have this book, Jon goes much deeper after the verse in Colossians, on page 1318. He includes discussion on Jeremiah 17:9 about how “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked.” Jon states, “This is where the Word comes in.” I really like the picture of deciding if something is safe or out though, and thought it could be a barometer to help guide, once the Word has been consulted and the decision is left up to free will. Now instead of an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, an umpire can set up residence, calling those everyday “plays.”

Simple Pleasures

There is nothing like it…warm, melty whip creme on top of Earl Grey tea; rainy, dreary, day that I don’t have to go out in; and a fire in the fireplace. MMmmm! Simple Pleasures for those of us who cannot have sugar. (otherwise there would have to be chocolate involved!)

Where your heart is…

Pictures like this bring to mind this verse:

Mat 6:19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
Mat 6:20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;
Mat 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I stared at the picture for awhile, trying to imagine how I would feel if my home and all of the contents were destroyed. I couldn’t. It made me think of the verse, and why God asks for us not to put our heart in our things. Most things wouldn’t bother me, but the lose of sentimental stuff would be hard to take. Yes, I understand that a lot of the people went the way of their house, and that is far worse, but it is good to examine from time to time, where our heart is, and those pictures are a call to reflection.

Half Way There?

New Year’s down, Christmas to go. Whew! Too tired to even post about it, just suffice it to say it was a success and everyone seemed to enjoy it, especially watching clips of my nieces and nephew in The Nutcracker! Between my birthday, Christmas, New Year’s, and Christmas tomorrow, I think I might sleep through the next few weekends! A girl can dream can’t she?
